FIREWOOD HEAT FACTS

Firewood is a renewable energy source. With proper sustainable harvesting techniques (as we practice) and efficient usage (burning), it is also a 'green', or environmentally friendly source, and can be quite economical as well. Wood is a renewable resource and unlike fossile fuels, burns with very low emissions. Burning wood gives off the same amount of carbon dioxide as wood left decaying on the forest floor.

To compare the relative costs of various home-heating fuels, consider the quantities of other fuels necessary to equal the heat output of a cord of firewood (a standard quantity of wood). The total available heat output of our premium firewood is, on average, about 24,000,000 Btu. (that is 24 million British thermal units, a standard measure of heat). This is the approximate equivalent of; a ton of soft coal, or 175 gallons of home-heating oil, or 7000 kw. hrs. of electricity, or 23,000 cu. ft. of natural gas, or about 260 gallons of propane.

However, to fairly compare and calculate the usable (net) heat output of a particular heating system, the heating system's efficiency using that fuel must be considered. The effectivness of systems can vary WIDELY--from about 10% for some open fireplaces, to near 100% for properly-maintained electric units (new electric heat pump units are actually more than 100%--yes!). The efficiency of your heating system directly relates to its age and condition.

In other words, a cord of wood burning in a 60% efficient stove, puts the same amount of heat in your house as $350.00 worth of heating oil ($2 per gallon through a 60% efficient furnace).

MEASURING FIREWOOD

The standard unit by which firewood has been measured for over a hundred years has been the cord (PA state law requires sellers of firewood to provide the buyer with a dollar amount per cord for the wood). A cord of (stacked) wood will fill a box that is 4 feet by 8 feet, with 4 feet sides. Visualize laying down a full sheet of plywood, and then 'casually' stacking firewood on it to a height of 4 feet. The volume of this 'box' is by math 128 cubic feet, and the wood is stacked, not thrown in loosely. 'Casually stacked' means not wasting time; not fitting each piece together as tightly as possible, as in a puzzle (a stack of wood is to have reasonable air channels for drying).

In the last decade or so, many people who sell wood in the northeast have adapted a loose (not stacked) volume measurement for a cord of firewood. This is generally around 170 cubic feet for 16-18" lengths (less for shorter lenghts)--loose wood takes up more space than stacked. This practice probably came about due to the fact that much of the wood is now machine-cut and pieces are very uniform in length; and, through many stacking trials this number seems to be the norm. Many (dump) truck beds are easily sided to match this volume and much of bulk (whole cords) loads of firewood are delivered in this manner these days.

There are other terms for quantities of firewood such as 'face cord' or 'rick' or 'bundle', to name a few. These are handy terms for sizes of stacks--but because of different lengths, they still must be converted to a cubic foot value, and ultimately compared to 'cord'. And by the way, comparing units of wood by WEIGHT is not the best method, because different species of wood have different densities, and the dryness or 'how green the wood is' can have a major effect on weight.

TERMS AND DELIVERY

Payment—We accept cash, PayPal, and checks. We prefer new customers to pay cash on delivery or prepay on the first order. Established customers may pay by check with proper information.

We process most loads to small-medium size diameters (approx. 2-6 inch) split pieces and rounds—generally about 80% split pieces and 20% small rounds. Lengths are consistent, generally 16". The wood is our local native hardwoods. Let us know any preferences at time of ordering and ask about age of wood available. Wood is considered dry to semi-dry (seasoned, not green) if seasoned from six months to two years (depending on species)

Our prices are shown above, plus a small delivery fee. This is a dumped truckload on your driveway or stable lawn area, or help with unloading of the truck if stacking close to the truck. Complete stacking by us or help with moving the wood long distances from the truck, will accrue extra charges at the rate of $20 per hour.

Delivery charges are about a dollar per mile one-way—examples are Windber (eastern) $10, Richland $20, Westmont $20+. A typical one-cord 'B' load dumped in the Richland area would be about $145.00 total (there is no sales tax on regular fuel wood in PA).

We also sell many other sizes and types of wood for burning and will be happy to give a quote on price. Some examples: Other sizes—18, 22, 30 inch lengths or all splits or all rounds. All one species—all oak or all locust. Kindling—15 inch soft EZ split wood or tree bark. Camping or bonfire wood. Outdoor furnace wood—30 inch any age Designer or Restaurant wood—super premium bundled birch and cherry. Atmosphere—poplar, pine, sassafras, etc. 24 inch fireplace wood. Chopping blocks—large green round for chopping with an axe. Mill (pallet mill) blocks—small square barkless chunks, etc.....

**LIHEAP HEATING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM**

The PA Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low income people pay for their heating fuels through home heating energy assistance grants and crisis grants. You can receive this money WITHOUT being in other assistance programs. We are a LIHEAP firewood vendor and can deliver wood to you with LIHEAP funds; you will have to sign up on-line or at the county office. There are two parts to the program; CASH assist needs to be set up in advance in the early fall, and you should have purchased a load of wood from us in the calander year to establish us as your supplier. CRISIS assist usually begins in January for people COMPLETELY out of fuel, or with heating system failures.

Local LIHEAP numbers: Bedford 624-4072, Blair 946-7365, Cambria 533-2253, Somerset 443-3683

To apply or for more info, contact your local county assistance office or call LIHEAP hotline 1-866-857-7095 or online www.dpw.state.pa.us and click on home heating assistance.
